director statement

Filming Composing Our Stories was a thrill. Having the opportunity to be able to share such an imaginative and successful person's mind with the world is an eye-opening experience. After watching the film and hearing Christian's stories, I hope that the audience is inspired to dream, create, and love a little bit more.

Christian Kolo (b. 1996) currently attends Michigan State University studying music composition with Zhou Tian and Ricardo Lorenz. Born in West Bloomfield Michigan, a suburb of Metro-Detroit, Christian began composing music in his sophomore year of high school. During his attendance at West Bloomfield High School, his instruction began with Sheryl Hauk, studying theory and composition his junior and senior year. Along with composition, Christian is very interested in musicology and music education. He loves making classical/instrumental music fun and enjoyable for all ages and also for those who do not have an extensive musical background. Christian enjoys composing music for all ensembles and skill levels. He especially likes composing for large ensemble which provides a great palette of color and texture for which he enjoys writing with. Christian also works with film music website, as a film music critic.

He first fell in love with the genre of film music, listening and learning from some of the greats. He draws inspiration from composers such as: James Horner, Marc Shaiman, John Debney, John Williams, and Alan Silvestri. Christian has been expanding his knowledge in the great world of absolute music, finding great inspiration from composers like Mahler, Tchaikovsky, Strauss, and Rachmaninoff.

Christian was the runner up in the 2013 Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra Composition Competition as well as a winner of the Dallas Winds 2015 and 2016 Fanfare Competition. He has also composed many pieces which have been a part of reading sessions at Michigan State University, performed by the MSU orchestra (under Dr. Kevin Noe), the MSU Wind Symphony (under Dr. Kevin Sedatole), and by the Dali Quartet.

Christian hopes to continue creating music in which everyone can understand and enjoy!
